Every year, state parks throughout the United States
encourage people to start their year off right by going on a ‘First Day Hike,’
where they can both get some fresh air and also see the beautiful nature right
outside their doors. Last year, nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year this
way, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country!
If you spent your New Years Day like many of us, though –
hanging out on your Octagon couch! – you can still get a First Day Hike in your
own way by going on a hike this month. Strap up your sneakers and check out these
trails in the Roosevelt Island area!
D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, located at 1 FDR Four Freedoms
Park, Roosevelt Island which is 10 minutes from your Octagon apartment, is a
four-acre memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt that celebrates the Four Freedoms
he articulated in his 1941 State of the Union address.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, with its
public initiatives and meaningful architecture in view of the United Nations,
inspires each generation to define and defend President Roosevelt’s commitment
to essential human freedoms.
Plaza State Park, located at 4-09 47th Rd, New York which is 12 minutes
from your Octagon apartment, is a 12-acre riverside oasis that boasts
spectacular views of the midtown Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State
Building and the United Nations.
Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the park’s four piers or
through the park’s manicured gardens and unique mist fountain. Along the way
take a moment to admire the rugged beauty of the park’s centerpieces – restored
gantries. These industrial monuments were once used to load and unload rail car
floats and barges; today they are striking reminders of our waterfront’s past.
