Island Hopping in NYC This Winter

December 30, 2021

Who wants to do some island hopping this winter? No, not in the Caribbean, but right here in NYC! One of our fellow NYC islands, Governor’s Island, is adding a winter village this year and you can have a fun day at the tip of Manhattan with a short ride leaving from the Roosevelt Island Ferry Terminal. Read on to learn more about the winter village.

For the first time, with its Winter Village, Governor’s island, a popular summer destination, is providing cold-weather programming for visitors. The Trust for Governors Island, which oversees operations for the 172-acre island at the tip of Manhattan, also plans a mobile sauna and a dog run in January and an ice-sculpting competition in February. For snowy weather, there will be sleds, snowshoes and possibly cross-country ski rentals.

The massive ice rink will be open Fridays, weekends and on New York City public school holidays from noon to 5pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm, with extended hours available for youth, adult and nonprofit sports leagues and associations. There will be themed events as well as Free Admission Fridays!

Sleds will be available to rent alongside bikes from Blazing Saddles NYC. Governors Island will also have winter activities including cornhole, can jam and giant Jenga as well as winter arts and cultural programming and a dazzling display of holiday lights throughout Colonels Row. There will also be a fun and historic photo opp with a Coast Guard-era fire truck at the Winter Village.

Be one of the first New Yorkers to try out this new winter attraction in NYC! It’s just a ferry trip away from your Roosevelt Island apartment.
