Presidential History Near Roosevelt Island

February 22, 2022

While maybe not the most exciting of federal holidays, President’s Day does guarantee us a day off every February, and that in itself is a reason to celebrate. Enjoy the three day weekend this year by visiting one of NYC’s historical landmarks, many of which you can find not too far from Roosevelt Island.

Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site – New York is the birthplace of several US Presidents, but few are more beloved than the Roosevelts. The namesake of our own neighborhood, the Roosevelt family were NY icons who led our nation during the first half of the 20th century when American became the superpower it it today. Of the two President Roosevelt, one was born just 20 minutes away from your Octagon apartment.

Born in NYC in 1858, the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site is a recreated brownstone at 28 East 20th Street, between Broadway and Park Avenue South, in the Flatiron District of ManhattanNew York City. It is a replica of the birthplace and childhood home of 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, after the original structure was torn down in 1919.

Now serving as a house museum, tours are still hiatus due to COVID – however, you can take a virtual tour on their website without even leaving your Octagon apartment.
